Does YOUR hamster have The Right Stuff?

When I read that Neil Fraser's Meccano lava-lamp centrifuge only rotated at 42 revolutions per minute, I didn't think it sounded very impressive.

I take that back.

That is one of the most awesome 1m 49s worth of YouTube I have ever watched.

Fragile glass canister filled with hot oil and wax doing 42rpm @ what appears to be about 1m radius, sure, I might do that but not in my living room!

    Is it impressive?

"If not perfectly adjusted and lubricated, it will shred the teeth off solid brass gears in under a second. Runs were conducted from the relative safety of the next room while peeking through a crack in the door."

    Yes, I think so.

If I ever compile a list of awesome things on the internet, that definitely makes it.

About 1.5m radius, 42rpm = 24 km/h tip speed. Not actually as quick as it looks, but I sure wouldn't want to get hit by it!

    Instant IgNobel prize winner!

Also, I must know what song that is, or curiosity might kill me.

    Ah. Riverdance. Shoulda have guessed...

Not sure this shows much about Jupiter, though. I perceive what appears to be significant Coriolis circulation. That's to be expected, given the small moment arm, which does not represent the situation on Jupiter very well.

On the other hand, one has to admire the dedication to science, however half assed. Way to trash the living room!
