I've moved!

How To Spot A Psychopath has a new, eponymous, home.

I'm sure there are more unwieldy domain names than howtospotapsychopath.com, but there can't be all that many of them.

Anyway, update your links, and all that.

I'm afraid you're also going to have to re-create your commenter accounts - all of your comments are here, but you, as such, are not.

It might have been possible to port the user data over too, but there are, I don't know, maybe one or two hundred real commenter accounts, and the old blog ended up with nine thousand, nine hundred and six users in the list. And that's after hundreds, if not thousands, of "ItnBkSIjZaQtDw <asdfwerj6@gmail.com>" sorts of users (none of whom ever managed to post a comment) had been pruned out by the Blogsome admins.

Now I've got proper admin access of my own and such obscenities should not be allowed to re-occur, but re-creating the accounts is the price that must be paid. By you, not me. Which makes it a particularly pleasing sort of price, from my point of view.

Now I just need to get my arse in gear and actually write a few more posts.

(Do please complain, below, about anything that doesn't work on this new site. Like the absence of comment preview, for instance. I might give it a few more years before turning that on again.)

Comments are broken! Wait. . . crap.

  2. Anon Says:

I'd be more concerned about the apparent lack of any RSS feed, how is anyone expected to follow it without one?

  3. Cods Says:

I second the request for an RSS feed, please.
Who'd you end up hosting with, Dan?

  4. Itsacon Says:

Just follow Dan on Twitter, I assume all updates here will be posted there again, right?

So you've gone for the wordpress.com hosting then?

  5. liinux Says:

RSS works perfectly for me in Firefox.

I am more concerned with that my RSS bookmark now has changed name from "Name Dan's Blog"...

  6. Anon Says:

    Twitter isn't RSS.

Nor does the subscribe option in the firefox menu work for all feed readers (i.e. there needs to be a specific link to the feeds somewhere).

  7. dan.todd Says:

Re RSS just use the domain name. Most readers are smart enough to try the default and common rss file names. Works perfectly with Google Reader.

    Testing. Yay, I exist!

I'm glad to see you've implemented Gravatars.

Looks like a nice clean new interface, though on 1600x1200 the sidebars take up a bit too much space (about 2/3s of the screen is not the article, vs. only about 10% previously...though you might not be able to do anything about that).

    - Threaded comments = nifty :D
    - May be worth CAPTCHA'ing account gen, to at least delay the endless legions of 'bots.

  12. Gomisan Says:

I second the need for a good Captcha on teh registration. WordPress seems to be a particular target for spammers.

  13. Anon Says:

I was under the impression that basically none of the bots ever actually posted on the old one (still raises the question of why someone would bother registering so many, but comment spam still appears despite rel=nofollow being almost universal).

None of the gibberish-named robo-created accounts ever posted, no, but there were thousands of them and they made Blogsome's somewhat limited admin interface a pain to use.

Spammers did get through semi-regularly, but only about one a week, and it was easy to nuke their comments. I'll try to set up this new blog to work the same way - I'd rather have to manually tidy up after a small amount of spam than frequently block valid comments.

Damn it! I meant to recreate my account but I chose the wrong user name. I should have chosen PaperDocket (no space). Bah, it doesn't really matter.

I like the look of this new site. Simple and clean.

Gravatar hmmm? My name claims yet another SQL system, mwahahahaha!

    Dan,

your mail setup seems to be broken. A mail I tried to send in November bounced after 1 week in my MTAs queue ('Connected_to_64.85.10.4_but_connection_died.'), the second attempt looks like it'll have the same result. A quick test reveals that your mail server accepts the connection, and then immediately drops it. I tried from 4 different non-dialup systems in 4 different countries, so it shouldn't be a weird blacklist problem.

    dan,

You have a great blog, and from a quick look - do brilliant work, thanks.

I found your work because I was disappointed/surprised by a big ad in the "Tweed Shire Echo" 15/12/11 for a product called "Envirotabs" complete with the semi-obligatory "distributors wanted call Tony..."(mobile - no landline), it's a petrol additive.

I followed the whole 'firepower' thing and wondered if those people were back in the same caper so I googled a bit and found your great work from a few years ago.

Thanks to the internet, I now know how big and widespread the fuel additive lark is and that it has a long history!

Thought you folks might be interested to hear that this stuff also alters your gear-box ratios!!:

That's a great testimony. Curtis is probably a big fan of "Fox".

I'm going to buy a few 'envirotabs' for my perpetual motion machine to see if I can improve its efficiency.

    Thanks.
